/01 · My story

Your team problem isn’t an HR problem. It’s a leadership problem.

I grew up in Moab, Utah, where the world’s playground was my backyard. I studied English at BYU because I loved how a good story could change what a person was willing to do. I didn’t know it yet, but that idea would follow me into every job I’ve had.

Over the years I’ve worked for both kinds of leaders. I’ve had leaders who cared about me as a person, and I would have walked through walls for them. I’ve also had leaders who made me feel demeaned and looked down on. The work was often the same. What changed was how hard I was willing to try. I’ve spent most of my career trying to understand that difference.

That question took me into the research. I completed doctoral coursework in organizational behavior, taught leadership in a business school, and published three articles in Financial Times Top 50 journals. The finding I kept running into was simple: leaders rarely see themselves the way their teams do. That distance is what I call the Leadership Gap.

Then I took it inside real companies. As an HR business partner, I worked through a post-acquisition integration. As a Chief People Officer, I’ve helped lead a company through growth from 300 to more than 800 people. The research held up. The teams that thrived had leaders willing to look at the gap. The ones that struggled had leaders who couldn’t, or wouldn’t.

Along the way, I’ve sat across from a lot of owners. Most of them are carrying more than they let on: a partner pulling in a different direction, a good employee who just gave notice, decisions that still land on their desk at 9 p.m. And most of them are closer to being good leaders than they think. They just can’t see what their team sees.

That’s why I started Bishoff Advisory. I help owners of 20- to 80-person firms lead the team they’ve built. It isn’t HR admin. It’s leadership, strategy, and structure, and we work on what’s causing the problems instead of chasing the symptoms. The work is hard, but your team will notice.

When I’m not working, I’m home in Spanish Fork with my wife and three kids. You’ll usually find us fly fishing, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, or out in the garden. I believe a business should serve your life, not consume it, and that’s what I want for the owners I work with.
